Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike many states, NC restricts the dollar value of a single project based on your license level:
• Limited: Authorized for projects up to $750,000.
• Intermediate: Authorized for projects up to $1,500,000.
• Unlimited: No restriction on the project value.

To qualify, your company must meet specific “Working Capital” or “Net Worth” thresholds:
• Limited: $17,000 working capital or $80,000 net worth.
• Intermediate: $75,000 working capital.
• Unlimited: $150,000 working capital.
• Note: If you don’t meet these, you can instead post a Surety Bond ($175k for Limited, $500k for Intermediate, $1M for Unlimited).

Who can be a “Qualifier” in North Carolina?
A qualifier must be an owner, officer, or a full-time W-2 employee in a management position. North Carolina strictly prohibits using independent contractors or “consultants” as qualifiers.

North Carolina accepts the NASCLA Accredited Examination. If your qualifier has passed this national exam, they can often waive the technical “Building” portion of the NC exam, though they must still pass the North Carolina Business & Law section.

A single individual may serve as the qualifier for no more than two separate licenses at any given time.

If your qualifier resigns or is terminated, you must notify the Board within 10 days. The license will remain valid for 90 days from the date of disassociation, during which time you must find and approve a new qualifier.

Yes. Every licensed General Contractor in North Carolina must complete 8 hours of CE annually. This includes a 2-hour mandatory course produced by the Board and 6 hours of elective courses. This must be completed by November 30th each year.

Yes. NC has reciprocity agreements for General Contractors with:
• South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Louisiana.
• Note: This typically waives the technical exam but still requires the NC-specific application and financial background check.

While the state board focuses on financial solvency (net worth/bonds), most NC municipalities and commercial contracts require a minimum of $1,000,000 in General Liability. Additionally, if you have 3 or more employees, Workers’ Compensation insurance is mandatory by state law.

Contractor Qualifier Connect operates a contractor qualifier network. We introduce licensed contractors who are willing to act as qualifiers to vetted construction companies that require a qualifying individual under applicable state law.

Our role is limited to introduction, vetting, and administrative coordination. We do not perform construction services, supervise work, or act as a licensing authority.
